Looking for a Dog Beach Near Key Biscayne? Head to Hobie Beach

Find Hobie Beach on the way to Key Biscayne, compare Crandon and Bill Baggs pet rules, and plan parking, tolls and a dog-friendly outing.
For a dog-friendly beach near Key Biscayne, head to Hobie Island Beach Park on the Rickenbacker Causeway. It overlooks Biscayne Bay on the way from mainland Miami to Key Biscayne—not at Crandon Park or Cape Florida. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau describes Hobie as a beach where dogs can play off-leash. GMCVB dog-friendly beach guide
That distinction matters: the two main public beach destinations on Key Biscayne proper have different, more restrictive pet rules.
Which beach can you visit with your dog?
| Destination | Pet-dog access | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Hobie Island Beach Park / Hobie Beach | Dog-friendly beach; GMCVB describes off-leash play—follow posted rules | Sand and a supervised splash in Biscayne Bay |
| Crandon Park | Pets prohibited throughout the park; service animals excepted | A separate beach outing without your pet |
| Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park | Dogs allowed in specified non-beach areas on a six-foot leash; no pets on the beach | A leashed walk or picnic, not dog swimming |
Crandon’s rule comes from Miami-Dade County’s park page. At Bill Baggs, permitted areas include picnic areas, the seawall, bike trails and hiking trails. Pets must remain attended, and are excluded from the wetlands, playground, lighthouse and other listed facilities; guide and service animals are exempt from those restrictions. Bill Baggs pet rules

Getting to Hobie Beach: parking, tolls and transport
Search your navigation app for Hobie Island Beach Park or Hobie Beach–Windsurfer Beach, rather than simply “Key Biscayne beach.” The destination’s official tourism listing places it between Brickell, Downtown Miami and Key Biscayne and lists free parking. Free parking does not mean a toll-free drive. Hobie Beach visitor listing
As checked October 19, 2026, the Rickenbacker Causeway’s published entry toll for a two-axle vehicle is $3.25 with SunPass or $6.50 with Toll-by-Plate. Toll-by-Plate also carries a $2.50 monthly invoice fee. With a rental car, check your rental agreement’s toll-processing terms before setting off. Miami-Dade causeway tolls
Without a car, the dog’s size affects your options. Miami-Dade Transit requires pet animals to travel in a properly enclosed carrier that does not block aisles or safe exits; a leash alone is not enough. Service animals have separate access rules. For a dog that cannot travel comfortably in a compliant carrier, arrange pet-accepting transport both ways. Transit animal rules
Make it a short, weather-ready outing
Treat Hobie as a dog-beach stop, not an automatic all-day beach plan:
- Bring a leash and check posted boundaries and rules before letting your dog off-leash. Keep your dog close around parking areas and other beach users.
- Pack fresh water, a bowl, waste bags, shade and a towel. Don’t let your dog drink seawater, and supervise it in the water. Dog-beach safety advice
- Check water quality before allowing a swim. Miami Waterkeeper updates the Dog Beach monitoring page; check the sample date as well as the displayed status. These bacterial test results are not a real-time assessment of all swimming hazards.
- Choose a cooler part of the day and keep the plan flexible. If heat, storms or water conditions make the outing unsuitable, skip the swim rather than trying to replace it with Crandon’s beach.
If you want to continue onto Key Biscayne with your dog, a permitted leashed walk at Bill Baggs is the practical alternative—not its ocean beach.
